What happens before a hypospadias repair?

The Pediatric surgical team will do clinical examination of child and note the relevant findings. They will locate the opening in their penis, ask questions, including how strong their urine flow is, in which direction their urine flows and if there is any spraying or leaking. They will also ask questions related to curvature of penis when it is erect.

Is there a role of testosterone before hypospadias surgery?

In severe cases, sometimes testosterone injections are recommended in preoperative period. It is useful in increasing the length and width of child’s penis. A larger penis helps improve the odds of a successful surgery. However, it increases bleeding and hematoma formation and is not universally accepted by pediatric surgeons. There are no universally accepted schedule but are commonly given as

  • Testosterone injections 

  • Local- 10% testosterone locally

Injection two schedules-

  • Teaststerone enanthate- 1mg/kg every 3 weeks x3 months

  • Testosterone 25 mg im 6 weeks and 3 weeks before surgery

  • If your child is sick with an upper respiratory infection, ear infection, cold, cough, sore throat, fever or any other illness, please call your surgeon’s office to report the illness

  • Make sure your child has had a thorough bath or shower a day before or in  the morning of  surgery. Clean skin, hair, fingers and nails will help prevent infection.

  • The exact time of your child’s surgery and admission  will be finalized  and will be informed by surgical team.

  • It is strongly recommended that the anesthetist sees you before surgery, so that they can plan and explain the procedure in detail to you. They are available in second floor. Ask the reception for guidance. This is called Pre-Anesthetic assessment.

The day of surgery at home

  • Dress your child in loose, comfortable clothing. Pack an extra set of clothes.

  • Remove any body piercings or jewellery.

  • Bring your insurance  or medical card along with any ID proof of child as well as parents(Voter ID/Driving Licence/Aadhar Card)

  • Please bring a copy of the all medical history, physical exam and investigations  with you on the day of surgery.

  • Bring a list of your child’s medications, including vitamins and any over-the-counter medication.

  • Children are encouraged to bring their favourite stuffed animal and items (books, handheld video games, etc.) to keep them occupied.

  • Bring bottles, sippy cups and diapers as needed.

  • We recommend that siblings stay at home. You should plan to spend most of the day at the hospital.

Where to park and check in with my child?

Valet Jacket

  • Valet parking is available at the entrance. You can also park in basement 2 and 3 and take lift to reach Upper ground (UG ) floor.

  • Check in on the suggested time of arrival at the Admissions Office, which is located on the Ground floor.

  • The suggested time of arrival is never the scheduled time of surgery and you may have been/ will be informed about scheduled time of surgery ,either before or after arrival.

  • Be prompt, as delay in arrival can delay or cancel the surgery.

  • If you enter at the main entrance of the hospital, proceed straight ahead and ask at the reception for the Admissions Office.

  • Keep your TPA papers, approvals, Cash or  credit/debit card handy.
